The new build project covers 16,500m² and was the second phase of education works in Midlothian Council’s long term strategy.

Main Contractor, Barr Construction was determined to ensure that they chose the correct build solution for this project. Design meetings were held at an early stage involving the M&E Consultants, M&E Contractors and velta to establish this. After careful consideration, the velta cast in-situ structural application was chosen and the velta system was installed directly into the reinforced concrete ground floor slab. The elimination of the requirement for a screed with the associated costs and drying times was a major benefit to the project as was the ease of installation of the slab solution.

William Smillie, Divisional Director of Barr Construction said: “We wanted to use the best available solutions on the project and velta provides several different options, making each one bespoke to the particular build. This approach proved very successful on the primary schools build along with bringing the latest in surface heating and cooling technology to the fore.”

Gerald Kemp, Managing Director of velta added: “Our in-situ slab solution was perfect for this project as the contractors wanted to eliminate the timescales associated with a more traditional screed floor.”
