How does the Uponor Solid Screed system work

The Uponor Solid Screed Tacker System is a simple and cost-effective way of installing underfloor heating and cooling in a new build property. It is designed to be clipped directly to the flooring insulation board.

The system is incorporated into the build of the house at the initial stages. After the concrete slab is cast and insulation is added to increase the efficiency of your building, solid screed is applied.

After the final screeding is applied, you will have an invisible, comfortable and efficient underfloor heating solution.  As part of our commitment we will fully quote, design and can even install your system.

Technical features of our system:

  • Unique multiple barbed clip for secure fastening
  • Welded clip magazine to ensure no gun jams
  • Can be fixed directly to existing floor-grade insulation
  • Accommodates various pipe layouts and spacings
  • A traditional way of implementing underfloor heating and cooling

Why should screed be used with underfloor heating?

Screed is a vital component for underfloor heating (UFH) systems for several reasons:

  • Efficient Heat Distribution: Screed acts as a conductor, spreading the heat from the underfloor heating pipes evenly across the floor surface. This ensures a consistent and comfortable warmth throughout the room.
  • Thermal Mass: Screed has good thermal mass, meaning it can absorb and store heat. This allows the floor to stay warm for longer periods after the heating system is turned off, improving energy efficiency.
  • Smooth Surface: Screed creates a smooth and level surface that's perfect for installing various floor finishes like tile, wood, or laminate. These materials can effectively transfer heat from the screed to your feet.
  • Pipe Protection: The screed layer encases the underfloor heating pipes, protecting them from damage during floor installation and everyday wear and tear.

Solid Screed for Underfloor Heating FAQs

What is screed?

Floor screed is a thin layer (usually less than an inch) made of cement and sand. It is applied on top of a concrete subfloor to create a smooth, level surface for final flooring materials like tile, carpet, or hardwood.

Concrete subfloors are layers of concrete poured directly on the ground. They provide a solid, stable base for the rest of the flooring system and help protect your home from moisture damage and mould.

What are the three types of screed?

There are three main types of floor screed used for different applications: bonded, unbonded, and floating. They vary in thickness and attachment to the subfloor.

  • Bonded screed: Thin (25-40mm) and directly applied to the concrete slab with an adhesive. Ideal for continuous construction or underfloor heating systems with cast-in pipes.
  • Unbonded screed: Thicker than bonded screed and separated from the concrete subfloor by a damp-proof membrane. Doesn't require adhesive and allows for movement without cracking. Often used with underfloor heating.
  • Floating screed: Thickest type, often used with insulation layers. Provides thermal and acoustic insulation and a moisture barrier. Ideal for buildings with underfloor heating or requiring insulation.

Should all underfloor heating have screed?

While omitting screed might seem appealing for faster installation and lower cost, the downsides of underfloor heating performance are significant.

For most cases, a solid screed is highly recommended to ensure efficient and comfortable underfloor heating. However, you should consult professionals (like us) to ensure compatibility and performance of your underfloor heating screed.
